Unbelievable political reversals are revealed by an opinion poll conducted by the authoritative independent statistician Nikolaos Kardoulas for radio station Radio Me 88.4 regarding voting intentions in Crete. The survey was conducted between September 22 and 24 among 2,172 individuals who vote in the Region of Crete, with its findings pointing to rapid changes that serve as a bellwether for wider political developments across the Greek territory. To calculate voting intention, the survey's raw data were weighted based on occupational and age groups, gender, and vote choice in the national elections of June 2023.
50% drop for ND in Crete
New Democracy exhibits a steep decline of roughly 50% in its polling figures in Crete (19.3%) compared to the national elections of June 2023 (37.3%), with PASOK (17.5%) following less than two percentage points behind, while ELAS takes third place (15%), approximately four percentage points off ND. However, ND's drop in Crete does not constitute the plot twist itself; this was largely suspected following the high-profile OPEKEPE scandal that originated in Crete.
Symmachia Ellinon emerges as 4th party
The ultimate plot twist is that the fourth party in the polls is Symmachia Ellinon, the party supported by Ilias Kasidiaris. Specifically, Symmachia Ellinon garners a 6.3% share, KKE receives 5.2%, Course of Freedom 4.4%, Voice of Reason 4.2%, the Samaras party 3.4%, Karystianou's Hope 2.8%, MeRA25 2.7%, Greek Solution 2.5%, and SYRIZA 1.9%. Symmachia Ellinon records its highest percentage in the regional unit of Rethymno, where it secures 8.9%, while receiving 5.3% in Lasithi, 5.5% in Chania, and 5.5% in Heraklion.
Young voters cast anger ballots
The second major surprise—which likely holds true for the rest of the country—is that among the 17–24 age bracket, Symmachia Ellinon emerges as the leading party with a resounding 21.4%, while Voice of Reason comes second with 11.4%, followed by KKE at 9% and the Samaras party fourth at 8%. Even in the next age category (25–34), Symmachia Ellinon ranks very high, competing closely with ELAS (13.1%) and Course of Freedom (13%) at 12.7%. In these demographics, ND is virtually non-existent, garnering 5.3% in the first group and 8.6% in the second, while maintaining the top spot among ages 35–44, 45–54, and 55–64.
Farmers switch allegiance
The third major surprise stems from the occupational categories surveyed in the study. Symmachia Ellinon records exceptionally high numbers among agricultural workers (16.4%) and university students (16.5%), while also enjoying a high approval rating among private sector employees. All of the above point to a new current surging through society that cannot be fully grasped from the safety of an office desk. The message for political change, amid the massive shifts taking place Europe-wide, is resounding and signals what lies ahead in the next national elections.
